Los Deudos by Andres Ruiz is my first encounter with this talented musician from Argentina. Ruiz is a multi instrumentalist, being credited with piano, electric piano, synthesizers, electric guitar, drums, percussion and vocals. Seems to me that keyboards are perhaps is first love, his playing being very creative and emotional. He is joined by a group of musicians for bass, electric guitar, viola and saxophone on a number of tracks, so there is a band feeling about this album, a good thing IMO, solo projects often having a weakness in one the instruments. This is not the case here.
Los Deudos is an album that makes me think of some of the best seventies mellow symphonic Prog music. Bands like Camel and Genesis come to mind, but my first reference would be PFM. The fact that Andres Ruiz sings in his native tongue also adds to the link I make with PFM (p.s. I know that Spanish and Italian are different languages, but to me they have similarities since I understand neither). Andres Ruiz's singing is delicate but very good and emotional. It adds to the beauty of the music featured on this album. Don't get me wrong though about the references I made. Andres Ruiz's music owes nothing to PFM or any other band, the music on Los Deudos is totally original and really deserves to be heard.
If you are into the bands I have listed in this review, please do yourself a favour and check Andres Ruiz out. You can go to his Myspace page using our direct link and take a listen. Highly recommended indeed!!!!!!
